Shamaal J. Irving, of the City of Poughkeepsie, was found dead around 10 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 17, after City of Poughkeepsie
Police received a 911 call from the tenant of 107 North Bridge St., that he had shot someone during a robbery attempt, said Det. Lt. Matt Clark.
The man told police that two men attempted to rob him at gunpoint in his apartment. He told officers he began fighting with the men, was able to get the gun away from one and shoot him, Clark said.
The second man then fled on foot.
Irving was pronounced dead at the scene.
"This was not a random act," said Clark. "It’s believed the intended victim was targeted because he was known to sell marijuana."
An autopsy was conducted on Irving yesterday by the Dutchess County Medical Examiner’s Office; the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the neck and head.
Irving was armed with a handgun when he was shot, Clark said.
Police believe the second man involved in the robbery was also shot. He has not been identified yet.
"At this point in the investigation it is believed after fleeing the apartment, it is possible he fled the area in an unknown vehicle," Clark said.
He has not sought treatment at any of the local hospitals.
The man is described as being black, less than 6-feet-tall, with a stocky build.
The investigation is continuing, anyone with information is asked to call the City of Poughkeepsie Police at 845-451-7577.
